Hybrid Investment
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have a combustion engine and a battery charged through operation of the vehicle, not from a separate power source. Fuel economy can be much better and emissions lower across the board compared with conventional vehicles. But improved efficiencies vary from only 10% to 50% or even more depending on the specific hybrid technology used in the vehicle. Most HEVs sold today run on regular unleaded gasoline but hybrids can also be designed to run on any other conventional or alternative fuel.
There are some reports of hybrid electric vehicles costing more money at the time of purchase than will be saved in fuel consumption. While this may be true, depending on the type of HEV as well as driving patterns, the environmental benefits far outweigh any gap in cost efficiency.
Hybrid electric vehicles are proven to reduce emissions, with the potential to emit zero harmful particles. While the complexity of these vehicles add to their cost, many still improve gas mileage and prove to be an investment in the long run.
To see which HEVs under what driving patterns will give you a return on investment, please visit the Department of Energy's Hybrid Vehicle Cost/Benefit Calculator before deciding which alternative fuel vehicle is best for you.
